Self-Referral Information

Pharmacy First

You can now visit a local pharmacy to get advice and treatment, including prescription medicines, for the below seven common conditions (alongside their age criteria), without needing a GP appointment:

  • earache (aged 1 to 17 years)impetigo (aged 1 year and over)

  • infected insect bites (aged 1 year and over)

  • shingles (aged 18 years and over)

  • sinusitis (aged 12 years and over)

  • sore throat (aged 5 years and over)

  • urinary tract infections, or UTIs, in women (aged 16 to 64 years)

Please note other eligibility criteria may apply but do not worry as the pharmacist may still be able to provide advice and care such as suggesting an over-the-counter treatment or if required refer you back to the GP.

Additionally, you may also be able to get over-the-counter remedies for minor ailments such as:

  • athlete’s foot

  • dry eyes

  • excessive sweating

  • hay fever

  • mild acne, dry skin or nappy rash

  • ringworm

  • threadworms

  • thrush

  • warts and verrucae

Physiotherapy

If you have pain relating to muscles or joints or have limited function or pain following an injury, physiotherapy may be appropriate. Please note that this physiotherapy service is not suitable for you if you are under 16 years of age or would like to be treated in your own home.

You can refer yourself to the physiotherapy service by calling 0300 300 0046.

Podiatry

If you have any foot conditions such as the following, you can self-refer via the website here

  • painful toenails, including ingrown toenail

  • painful corns

  • open wounds below the ankle for 4+ weeks

  • children with foot pain

  • sudden red, hot, swollen foot +/- open wound

  • assessment & treatment of musculoskeletal problems associated with walking or running

  • a food problem where a medical condition poses a risk to the feet

Mental Health

  • Adults – Anyone needing mental health support for themselves or others can call the Mental Health Central Access Point on 0808 800 3302. The website also has a lot of information and advice on contraceptive options, and can even allow you to access oral contraception, emergency contraception, contraceptive coils, or contraceptive implant.
