Carers

What is a Carer?

A carer is someone who spends a lot of time providing a variety of emotional and / or practical support to a loved one, family member or friend, because of their disability, physical or mental ill health, substance misuse or because they are elderly and frail. Carers are not paid, and every caring situation is unique. A carer can be any age and so can the person you look after. Nor do you have to live with the person you care for.

You are a carer if you support someone who could not manage without you.

Carers Register & Clinic

If you believe you are a carer then it is important that you inform the practice so we can add you to our Carers Register and make everyone aware at the practice of your situation. You can contact reception at any time to inform us that you are a carer (or if your circumstances change and you are no longer a carer).

You may also benefit from the Carers Clinic (run by the Carers Health and Wellbeing Service) which is held at the surgery on the last Wednesday of the month.

During your appointment, the Carers Health and Wellbeing Service can support you in your caring role. Their friendly, experienced team is here to help you in all kinds of ways, including:

  • Helping you find relevant services that could support you, or help you sort out a specific issue.
  • Listening to your views and making sure you get the support you are entitled to or improving the support you get at the moment.
  • Give you support and information on other services available to you.

If you are interested in making an appointment for the Carers Clinic, please contact the surgery on 01530 832 109.

For more information, advice or support please call the Carers Health and Wellbeing Service on 01858 411 380 or visit www.carers.org.
